Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(drums thumping) (Speaking Passamaquoddy) - [Host] We Native peoples have lived on this land for more than 10,000 years.
- We're often referred to in the history books in the past tense, but here we are in the present and we're going full force.
- We're scientists, we're engineers, we're doctors.
We are doing things to make a difference in this world.
- [Host] But in the telling of the story of America, we were recast, outcast.
- Native people, we have a history of being misrepresented.
- [Host] Now we're telling our own story, our own way.
- It's about us taking that power for ourselves representing ourselves in the way we see ourselves.
- Their voices will not be on a shelf.
(Speaking Passamaquoddy) Language is who I am.
- Let's go to the next line.
(Speaking Navajo) - It's not just a movie.
That's stuff we really believe.
- Nice.
Perfect.
- Our people never gave up.
They paved the way for us to be here today.
- I've heard them say I'm gonna knock out this little Indian girl, but at the of the fight, Mariah's still standing.
- I feel like I'm building my own path and making a new path for other women.
- Sometimes the world thinks they can just roll over us, and that's not true.
- They gave their lives for us to be here.
- If we find life on Mars, it's going to teach us so much about our own existence not only on this planet, but in this entire universe.
(Speaking Navajo) - Walking In Beauty.
That philosophy encompasses many teachings to guide us.
- [Voice On Radio] Lift off.
- [Host] 21st century native peoples are carrying forward thousands of years of knowledge to create a better future for all.
- We're taking the old way and merging it with the 21st century ways and decolonizing ourselves in that process.
- [Host] This is Native America.
