Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- When I was younger, my favorite gymnast was Simone Biles.
She has 30 Olympic and World Championship medals and she's absolutely amazing and somebody that has inspired me throughout my whole career.
She is the GOAT.
Legend.
- [Billie Jean King] In 2019, Simone became the most decorated gymnast in the history of the gymnastics World Championships when she won her 25th World Championship medal, passing Belarus's Vitaly Scherbo, who previously held the record with 23 medals that year.
She also became the first woman to win five world all-around titles, debuting two historic moves that were later named in her honor: the triple-twisting, double-back on the floor exercise, and the double-twisting, double-back dismount off the balance beam.
After Simone's amazing accomplishments in 2019, it was all but guaranteed that she would sweep the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
- Going into the Olympics, like, me and my coach, we were set on like, okay, we're just gonna... go, compete for second, win a team medal, and you're gonna win a bars medal.
And I was like, okay, like, I'm competing for second.
I've been competing for second.
We just know Simone's always gonna be first.
My coach is like, "You're never gonna beat her."
And I was like, "Yeah, I know.
So we're competing for second."
- [Billie Jean] But in a moment that shocked not only the world, but her teammates, Simone Biles withdrew from the women's all-around gymnastics final at the Tokyo Olympics.
Biles experienced a dangerous phenomenon known as the "twisties," which occurs when a gymnast's body and mind are out of sync and the athlete cannot accurately assess where to land.
- And, like, especially with the team, we were all just sitting there panicking, like, we were crying on the floor.
And we were like, "What do we do now?"
But then she, like, came over and talked to us and Simone has always inspired me, so obviously, I'm gonna listen to her.
First of all, she was like, "I'm sorry that I can't compete."
And she was like, "You guys just gotta go out there.
I'll be your biggest cheerleader."
And we all just kind of huddled up and we were just like, "We have to do this for Simone, we have to do this for Team USA, and we have to do this for ourselves," because that's the whole reason we're here.
We're not here to please anybody else.
We're just here to do our thing.
- [Billie Jean] Simone's very public struggles on the world stage gave other Olympians, and people everywhere, permission to share their vulnerabilities and to prioritize their own mental health.
In addition to her incredible athletic accomplishments, Biles will forever be remembered for changing the conversation around mental health and normalizing self-care.
