When I was in junior high, kids my age did not listen to these songwriters, so it was really my older brother was the only person I knew that listened to them, but -- and my older cousins.

I mean, they showed me Todd Snider and Drive-By Truckers and James McMurtry and Robert Earl Keen and Slaid Cleaves and Adam Carroll and, I mean, on and on and on, songwriters, Rodney Crowell, and obviously Townes and Guy.

I was really lucky to be so influenced at such a young age, and not just hear the songs, but identify with those records and those artists, and I wanted to be like them and I wanted to write songs that I would always think, when I was a kid writing songs in my bedroom, "What would Todd Snider think of this?

Would he think it's good?

Would Ryan Adams like this?

Would John Mayer like this?

Would Rodney Crowell think this was good?

Would Steve Earle think that this is good?"

And would my older brother -- he's a phenomenal songwriter -- would he think it's good?

But, you know, after that, I got into high school and that's when I got into, you know, Randy Rogers Band and Cross Canadian Ragweed and Pat Green and all these, you know, Texas guys that were kind of running the show at the time and really still are.

And then I moved to Austin, and I went to Waterloo on Lamar and I bought "Heartbreaker" by Ryan Adams.

I bought -- I think it's "Blak and Blu," Gary Clark Jr. album.

-Mm-hmm.

-And I bought "Continuum" by John Mayer.

And I think it was "One Foot in the Ether," Band of Heathens.

-Mm-hmm.

-And those four albums kind of shaped those early years.

When I signed my record deal, you know, I passed on all the money up front that they usually give you and I just said, "Man, I just want the creative control."

I was like, "You can bet on me.

I'll bet on myself."

I want to write the songs and I want to record the songs how I want to record them, and I want to put out the records I want to put out, and nothing funny and nothing goofy, and I want to be an old man and look back and say, "I stuck to my guns and did it my way."

I'm just going to just, you know -- you know, I might show up and play a few songs on somebody's stage or maybe help out with somebody's fundraiser or something like that, but...

I wanted to go out pretty much the same way that I came in, with a lot of passion and a lot of excitement about what I do, and there was certain times in the last few years where I'd kind of felt like that might've been slipping a little bit.

I didn't actually phone any shows in, but I have to say, I might've picked up the phone to phone 'em in.

And I wanted to -- I want to just be able to say I could just, you know -- I could make that decision and stick to it, and then, you know, make -- in some ways, make two lives out of one, and where, you know, I did -- my life was really on the road for so many years, you know, 41 years basically, and I never had a lot of breaks and I didn't get to see my family as much as I wished I would have, and this way, I can have a lot more time to spend on things that I want to do.
